In 1979, radical hardliners in support of Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the US embassy in Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage as political prisoners. The event kicked off an international standoff that lasted 444 days as the United States negotiated the release of the 52 American hostages.
